Week of Methods 2018: a retrospective glance
From July 23 to 26, 2018, GGG’s 13th Interdisciplinary Week of Methods took place in the rooms of the historical observatory and the convention center. The Week of Methods started with an address of welcome by Dr. Bettina Roß und Dr. Britta Korkowsky, followed by a keynote on the philosophy of science: Prof. Dr. Paul Hoyningen-Huene (Hannover, Zürich) gave a presentation on „The Human Sciences between Quantification, Hermeneutics and the Use of Models“.
Participants could choose between four different workshops, including quantitative and qualitative methods as well as „mixed methods“. There was also a voluntary social program organized by GGG with a guided tour of the historical observatory, a barbecue, and a joint lunch break with an Indian buffet. In addition, GGG provided ample amounts of coffee and cold water during the breaks, the latter was especially welcome with regard to the high temperatures on all days. In retrospect, we are glad that despite the heat, discussion was lively and the participants could learn new methods or deepen their knowledge and, most important: nobody suffered from a heatstroke.
For us, the staff at GGG’s office, it was a great week with exciting chats and lots of direct contact. We thank all PhD students and teachers who participated in this year’s Week of Methods and we are already looking forward to the next one!
