„Anti-Semitism as an Experience and Phenomenon – Impulses for a University Practice Critical of Anti-Semitism“ (Deadline 20.11.2023)
Anti-Semitism occurs as a structural and institutional problem in diverse social and learning spaces. It ranges from subtle forms of expression to explicit aggression. Anti-Semitism is realised every day as a practice of violence in society as a whole, beyond the political commitment to remembrance and individual intentions. At the same time, trivialisation and lack of intervention on the part of the non-Jewish majority are structural features of institutional dealings with it (cf. e.g. Chernivsky/Lorenz 2022). Also with regard to the relevance of the topic, there is a strong divergence of perspectives (Anti-Semitism Report 2017) between the perceptions of those who are affected by anti-Semitism and those who are positioned non-Jewishly. These dynamics are also important for university teaching. The seminar addresses anti-Semitism as a phenomenon and experience against the background of the history of the impact of National Socialism and the Shoah in the German context. The seminar will provide approaches for professionalising teaching in a way that is critical of anti-Semitism and will jointly develop guidelines for appropriate interventions.
