Göttinger Graduiertenschule Gesellschaftswissenschaften

Science and Professional Practice for PhD students

After graduation, there are several career paths available to you besides research and teaching, e.g. in enterprises, in an administration, consulting, in NGOs, politics, or self-employed. In order to help you open up career paths outside academia, too, GGG has acquired “Praxismodule“ (“practice modules”) funded by Volkswagen Foundation. In realizing them, GGG cooperates closely with SüdniedersachsenInnovationsCampus (South Lower Saxony Innovation Campus, SNIC).

PraxismoduleFrom 2017 to 2019 the Volkswagen Foundation will fund so-called “Praxismodule” to connect science and professional practice. PhD students will receive funding for the time they do an internship or practical phase at a ‘professional partner‘ company or association. Thus, Praxismodule help to transfer knowledge between university and other professional fields, strengthen ties between professional partners and science and open up further professional fields for PhD students.

Even though funding for the Praxismodule is already allocated, you can still benefit from the program by taking part in the PhD students’ forum (“Promovierendenforum“) that will accompany the Praxismodule or by joining the alumni-group “Science and Practice“. Besides peer group activities, these groups offer valuable qualification and networking possibilities. If you are interested, please contact GGG at ggg@uni-goettingen.de.

The Praxismodule will be conducted at the faculties of Agriculture, Law, Social Sciences and Economics and furthermore at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization and the Institute for Small Business Economics at the ifh Göttingen.

Professional partners are the animal welfare organization PROVIEH, the Chamber of Crafts Hildesheim-Südniedersachsen, the Leipzig Transport Authority, the Smart:City Group of Volkswagen AG, the European Social Observatory, the District and Business Development Agency of the District Holzminden, and the Ministry for Environment, Energy and Climate Protection of Lower Saxony.

On February 8, 2018, Praxismodule will be presented to the general public. All members of GGG as well as all interested persons are cordially invited. You can learn more about the projects and network with other PhD students who aim at a career outside academia.

New insights from Praxismodule will be incorporated in the further development of GGG’s offers for the career start. Furthermore, the cooperation between Göttingen University and regional partners will be strengthened, which in turn will benefit future professional projects or mentorings.

The project Praxismodule complements the already existing “PraxisForscher“ of SüdniedersachsenInnovationsCampus (SNIC), which supports PhD students of the entire Göttingen Campus during their practice-oriented research in regional enterprises in Southern Lower Saxony. In this project, graduates integrate a practical phase in cooperation with a company into their dissertation and are supported for a maximum of 6 months with a remuneration of up to 50% TV-L E13. The practical phase must be significantly connected to the doctorate. The duration and amount of funding depends on the individual project. “PraxisForscher” can also take part in GGG’s offers in the Praxismodule program. Both funding lines cooperate closely and have joint qualification offers.

The common alumni-group “Science and Practice“ in the Alumni Portal will enable you to network with other PhD students as well as with alumni who successfully started their professional career.
